Leadership Story Talks | Running into Walls and AI Ethics with Laura Miller

Narativ Inc

“Walls don't always look like what you think they do. Sometimes walls look like a no. Sometimes walls look like a oh heck no (...) and sometimes walls just look like we haven't been able to imagine it a different way (...) But once you start getting more familiar with walls, you start recognizing which kind you're finding. And then once you understand why the wall is there, you know exactly what to pick at in order to test it, challenge it, and then you can change it or pull it down.”

In this episode, Jerome and Julienne talk to Laura Miller. Laura is the founder and CEO of NextGen Ethics, where she focuses on advancing ethical AI innovation and public trust. She is also a respected philosophy and ethics instructor at Webster University. Her contributions to tech ethics have earned her recognition from NASA, NIST, and the US State Department, and is also the author of the upcoming book "AI Ethics in Action." She tells the story of her philosophy professor running into a wall and shows how ethics runs into walls and how AI does too. They talk about whether or not AI can be like a human, whether AI only learns from humans or humans might also learn from AI, and how we need to be intentional about how we develop AI.

Listen to this episode to dive deeper into the ethics and philosophical questions behind the development and use of AI, and learn a lot about running into walls, or breaking them, in the process!
